Plastic materials are made of high molecular polymers, and different resins have different properties, including decomposition temperature, thermal history, and oxidation resistance. Even highly heat-resistant materials can gradually degrade and form carbonized residues when exposed to high temperatures for extended periods,including PP.

In normal production conditions, unless there is a machine problem, processors usually operate within the recommended processing temperature range. The Root Cause of Black Specks: Carbonized Resin During Machine Shutdown

Through on-site screw removal inspections at customer facilities, we found that the nozzle area usually contains the highest concentration of black specks and carbon deposits.Besides carbonized materials, a small amount of resin residue is also found in this area. This indicates that although operators normally empty the material before shutdown, a small amount of resin still remains attached to the screw surface, especially in the front section of the screw and nozzle area.The cooling process is gradual and time-consuming. During this cooling period, the remaining resin stays inside the barrel at elevated temperatures without being discharged, causing polymer degradation and carbonization.

Currently, there is no exact data indicating how long a specific plastic material can remain at a certain temperature before degradation occurs.However, practical experience shows that regardless of whether the material is ABS or PE, carbonized residues may still appear after the machine is powered off and left unused for one day.

Among common materials, PP generally has better performance in this aspect, while materials such as TPU, PVC, and POM are more likely to generate carbon deposits due to their own material characteristics.

Therefore:Machine shutdown is one of the major sources of black specks in plastic processing.
